Imaging of corals and mapping ocean floor using a gem
Florida Atlantic University are using our gem laser to support research in mapping the ocean floor. The gem is being used for 3 separate applications; fluorescence imaging of corals, ocean floor mapping – where the gem in its unmanned vehicle is submerged up to 2 miles in depth, and identification of submerged objects. High power pulsed lasers have been used for these applications, but conservationists are concerned about the effects that this may have on marine wildlife – concerns that are allayed by use of the gem in this technique. This project is receiving government funding due to the success of the results.
