3-D X-ray images ‘Giant Virus’

The new developments of a unique X-ray laser has enabled the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to image an infectious virus intact. Mimivirus, the name of the ‘giant virus’ was imaged and with the ability to reconstruct 3-D structures of live samples, scientists can learn more about the virus’ origins. The experiment involves a gas-propelled aerosol (with active Mimivirus) being sprayed into the X-ray laser beam and the scattering produces light patterns. Analysing these patterns enables the individual images to be compiled into a 3-D portrait using sophisticated software. Capturing different orientations allows for a more realistic 3-D view. Based on this breakthrough, single proteins is now a possibility. Full article: https://www6.slac.stanford.edu/news/2015-03-02-giant-virus-revealed-3-d-using-x-ray-laser.aspx
